Indications for use – what Propecia is used for
Propecia is used to treat male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia) on the crown and center of the head. It should only be used by adult men.
This medication works by decreasing the amount of natural hormone (DHT) in the body. Reducing the amount of DHT leads to increased hair growth and slower hair loss. Finasteride does not affect hair growth on other parts of the body. Women and children should not use this medicine.
Finasteride is not approved to prevent prostate cancer. This may slightly increase your risk of developing a very serious form of prostate cancer. Talk to your doctor about the benefits and risks.
The price of Propecia varies depending on the pharmacy where it is sold, but in general, generic finasteride is cheaper than the brand name.
How to use Propecia
Read the package leaflet provided by your pharmacist before you start taking finasteride. If you have any questions about this information, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Take finasteride by mouth with or without food, usually once a day or as directed by your doctor.
If the tablet is crushed or broken, it should not be taken into the hands of a pregnant woman or a woman who may become pregnant.
Use Propecia regularly to get the most benefit from it. Remember to use it at the same time every day. It may take up to 3 months to see benefits.
Side effects
There may be a decrease in sexual desire. In some men, this medicine may decrease the amount of sperm produced during sex. It is harmless, but in some men it persists even after stopping treatment. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist immediately.
Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medicine because he or she has decided that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this drug do not have serious side effects.
Tell your doctor right away if you experience any of these unlikely but serious side effects: breast swelling, nipple discharge, breast enlargement, tenderness, testicular pain, inability to urinate.
Contraindication
Propecia may interfere with the results of a blood test used to detect prostate cancer (prostate specific antigen or PSA). If you have a PSA test, make sure the lab staff and your doctors know you are taking this medicine.
