What is Fosamax used for?

treatment of glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis

Dosage and method of application of the drug Fosamax
Fosamax is intended for oral administration. It is taken at least half an hour before meals in the morning, immediately after waking up. Swallow the tablet with clean water. Any other drinks reduce the absorption of the drug.
In order to avoid irritation of the esophagus when taking Fosamax, it is recommended to follow the following instructions: take the tablet in the morning immediately after getting out of bed; swallow the tablet with a full glass of clean water, without chewing or dissolving the tablet in the mouth; it is not recommended to lie down before the first meal (at least 30 minutes after taking the pill). Do not take Fosamax before getting out of bed or at bedtime.
In case of insufficient intake of vitamin D and calcium, the simultaneous use of appropriate drugs is recommended.
The therapeutic dose of Fosamax in the treatment of osteoporosis is 70 mg (1 tablet once a week.
The dosage for the prevention of osteoporosis is 5 mg per day.
The dose in the treatment of glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis is 5 mg per day.
The dose in the treatment of Paget’s disease is 40 mg per day for 6 months.
Side effects
During clinical trials, side effects were rare, and their frequency was less than 1%. However, among them, the following side reactions are most often observed:
Constipation
Flatulence
Muscle pain
Pain in the bones
Headache
Dyspepsia
Diarrhea
Nausea
Abdominal pain
In rare cases, this osteoporosis medicine can cause bone loss in the jaws. Symptoms of this condition include: jaw pain or numbness, redness or swelling of the gums, loose teeth, or slow healing after dental procedures. The longer the patient takes Fosamax, the greater the likelihood of developing this disease.

Diseases of the esophagus, especially achalasia and esophageal stricture

Very carefully, alendronic acid for the treatment of bone thinning is prescribed for exacerbation of any disease of the stomach or intestines, especially with dysphagia, gastritis, duodenitis or stomach ulcers. In addition, dose adjustment is required if creatinine clearance is below 35 ml/min.
Drug Interactions
The absorption of alendronic acid may be affected by the use of antacids, calcium-containing drugs, and other oral medications.
